Client Care Volunteer

“Volunteers are unpaid, not because they are worthless, but because they are PRICELESS”

PHS is extremely fortunate and grateful to have such a solid network of caring, dedicated Client Care Volunteers – men and women of all ages who truly do make a difference to the lives of PHS clients and their families. All our Client Care Volunteers undergo a 10 week palliative care training course and receive ongoing support and additional training.

Volunteers support clients and carers with visits to the home, assistance with shopping, transport to local appointments and PHS activities, taking clients for a drive or an outing, having a chat and keeping them company while their carer is out – generally helping them to live their lives as fully as possible.

"Home hospice care seemed such a worthwhile form of community work, and one learns that there is nothing morbid about supporting the dying because this is a journey that ultimately all will face. So, for me, it has been a fascinating and continuing learning experience".
PHS Client Care Volunteer Jim Frew

Additionally volunteers continue to support PHS programs such as Bereavement Support Groups, Carer Support Groups, Studio Art Therapy. They also provide support to staff and clients in Peninsula Health’s Palliative Care Unit.

Volunteers commit to a block of up to four hours per week to support clients and carers, reassured by the knowledge that the ordinary things they do (such as having a chat, a cuppa, listening) can make a difference.

"It's a truly special time you're sharing with the client and the family and a true priviledge to be welcomed into their home. You get to travel their memories as they share stories and experiences with you...it's a gift".
PHS Client Care Volunteer Max Everett

Volunteering in palliative care is an opportunity to be involved with people who are at one of the most vulnerable phases of their life. Those wishing to become volunteers will usually have an understanding of the circumstances that face those living with a terminal illness. Palliative care volunteers are generally over the age of 18.
