ART THERAPY
“Life is a great big canvas and you should throw all the paint you can on it” - Actor Danny Kaye
An established therapy since the 1940s, Art Therapy combines art processes with therapy. For many, Art Therapy may be about exploring art making for enjoyment. For others, it may be using art to express and explore life.
For clients living with a terminal illness, the nature of Art Therapy extends an invitation for you to experience something new. Art Therapy requires no pre-existing skills.
Home-Based Art Therapy
PHS offers what is known as ‘Medical’ Art Therapy with a professionally registered Art Therapist for individual, couple and family needs at home.
There are a variety of choices for creative expression being offered to you in your own home such as painting, drawing, writing, printmaking, photography, digital media, sculpture, journalling, collage and craft, just to name a few. While we supply basic materials, our Art Therapist aims to resource and support your unique ideas.
Art Therapy can be used by almost anyone. It is about the experience, unless a finished product is your personal aspiration. Whether you use Art Therapy for enjoyment or as a support to your well-being, with the therapist you get to set your own goals.
Art Therapy may assist with:
- Anxiety and mood imbalances
- Quality of life and well being
- Pain and symptom support
- Processing stress, grief or loss
- Emotional release
- Nurturing a sense of self and identity
- Meaning and sense making
- Relationship strengthening
- Generating life interests
- Creating or completing legacies
- Fun and enjoyment
“Until I tried this I could never have believed that I could enjoy making art”
Studio Art Therapy
Studio Art Therapy is conducted at PHS and provides an opportunity to explore art as a means of expression within a group environment. In Studio Art Therapy there is a choice to make art or not. In each session there exists an offer to try out paint, to draw, write, collage, print, to browse the art books or to sculpt. The aim of this program is to enhance life via creative expression in the company of others, assisted by the Art Therapist.
"I like it because it’s time; time for me, time out for my loved ones”
If you are a person who is living with illness and receiving services from PHS, Studio Art Therapy may be helpful. Our confidential studio environment provides clients with a nurturing space to relax, be amongst others and explore using art for well being. The professional training of our Art Therapist ensures newcomers to art/art therapy are well supported.
