Bequests

A bequest is a gift left in a Will. It is a gift that lasts longer than a lifetime and which will always be remembered. It is an investment in the future, in the wellbeing and quality of life for others who come after us, a truly lasting legacy.

Bequests to PHS often come from people whose lives have been touched by the services we offer. PHS thanks and honours the individuals and families who have left bequests to PHS, knowing that this special gift will have significant impact into the future.

In making a bequest to PHS, you will be helping to ensure that community palliative care services continue to be available for clients living at home with a terminal illness, and their families, for many years to come. This is a wonderful legacy to leave.

PHS advise you seek professional legal advice to confirm the correct expression of intent in any new or existing Wills. Please consider the following options to include PHS as a beneficiary of your estate:
  1. a percentage of the residue of your estate to come to PHS after you have considered your family and friends. PHS may receive as much as 100% of the residue or any percentage you choose. The advantage to PHS is that your residual estate will reflect the current ‘value’ of the economy and the effects of inflation. This greatly assists us to use your bequest to provide client services in the current market economy.
  2. a particular asset may be left to PHS such as property, shares, a life insurance policy, an art work or any item of value.
  3. a specific amount of money may be left to PHS. However, the monetary value of this bequest is reduced over time because of inflation occurring in the economy.
  4. a charitable trust: for larger estates, tax issues may be a consideration as well as the benefit to PHS. In this option, the income from the trust is distributed to PHS according to your Will. Please consult with your legal advisor.
  5. If you want PHS to be a beneficiary but wish for your spouse (or another person) to continue living in the family home, then include them to have a life interest in the property specifically noted in your Will. PHS will receive the bequest following their death.
You do not have to tell us if you have made, or intend to make, a bequest to PHS in your Will. However we would be happy to hear from you or your solicitor on your behalf so that we may thank and acknowledge you (if you give permission for us to do so) and to keep you informed about the activities of PHS.

Please remember that knowledge of your bequest helps us in our forward planning for the needs of clients and their families. All information received by PHS will be treated in the strictest confidence and we will respect your wishes if you choose to remain anonymous.
