Through contractual agreement, all palliative nursing care is provided
by the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) through its Rosebud and Frankston
centres. RDNS nurses are specially trained in the management of terminal
illness and provide home-based services including pain management and wound
care. Communication between visiting nurses and the patient’s doctor
provides seamless and appropriate care. Nursing care is available 24 hours
a day.
While the patient’s own doctor remains in control of medical care,
PHS’s Director of Palliative Care Medicine is available to provide
clinical advice, support and consultancy services to the doctor.
Palliative care nurses, counsellors and physicians also provide a range
of education and consultancy services to nursing homes, hospitals, local
government, schools, universities and TAFE colleges.
